Working for Lucite International

Phil Bailey

EMEA General Manager, Mitsubishi Chemical MMA Business Domain

Executive Officer, Mitsubishi Chemical

Q. How long have you been at Lucite International?
A. I’ve been in the business under various ownership guises since 1989, but worked in a different business for the first few years before moving to the Methacrylates business in the early 1990’s.

Q. Describe working for the Company in three words
A. Diverse, challenging, rewarding.

Q. What do you do in your role on a day to day basis?
A. So many different things. The purpose of the role is to lead the whole EMEA team to develop and deliver the strategy for the EMEA business through engagement of everyone. In doing everything involved in that no two days are the same – I have meetings with people individually and as teams, both formal and informal; telephone calls with colleagues in other locations, interaction with colleagues in Tokyo, long and short haul travel, meetings with eg customers and suppliers, emails, presentations, negotiations etc.

Q. What has your training and development been like?
A. I had a lot of training and development courses early in my career, and more recently some really high quality senior leadership training. But actually the best development has been through the wide and varied roles that I have done, getting put into roles which have really challenged me, and where I’ve learnt and developed rapidly through experience.

Q. How would you describe the work environment and Company culture?
A. Strongly driven by a shared set of values – genuine respect for each other, challenging but supportive. A shared passion for the safety and well being of people and the drive to continuously improve things.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your role?
A. The diversity, and working with excellent colleagues who share the same values and goals. Really feeling as though we can make a positive difference to the long term future of the business and all who work in it.

Q. What advice would you give to somebody considering applying to Lucite International?
A. Make sure you feel culturally aligned and your values match ours – you will get a good feel for that from the people you interact with. When you join – make the most of every opportunity.
