Working for Lucite International

Stuart Arkle

R&D – Resins Experimentalist

Q. How long have you been at Lucite International?
A. I joined the Company at the Newton Aycliffe site as an apprentice in September 2012.

Q. Describe working for the Company in three words
A. Supportive, involving and rewarding.

Q. What do you do in your role on a day to day basis?
A. As a member of the R&D team at Newton Aycliffe, I do a range of tasks depending on the work flow. These include running lab polymerisations for new product development, operating the pilot plant for scale up of recipes to production level, as well as lab investigation work for customer and plant support.

Q. What has your training and development been like?
A. Training and development was a large part of my start as an apprentice. It was planned and implemented effectively, allowing me to progress new skills and learning, while also undertaking a part time degree. This training has been fundamental in furthering my role, developing my competencies and career progression.

Q. How would you describe the work environment and Company culture?
A. The culture and work environment are dynamic, with the view that everyone has a part to play in the success of exceeding targets and strengthening our position as the innovative market leaders we are known for.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your role?
A. What I enjoy most about my role is the variability of each project and working both in the lab and on the pilot reactor located in the plant. This allows the opportunity to work with other departments and in different environments which broadens experience and gives an insight into the whole working of the site. Being in R&D is interesting as it gives the prospect of working on products used in new technology such as 3D printing and you are involved from the start through to potentially seeing your project become commercial.

Q. What advice would you give to somebody considering applying to Lucite International?
A. Lucite International is a global business with many opportunities. The staff at Newton Aycliffe and those I’ve interacted with at Cassel in Billingham are all professional but friendly, making it a fantastic place to work!
